Disability Studies Certificate
Are you interested in learning about people with disabilities and how to create a more equitable, accessible, and inclusive society? If so, a disability studies certificate could provide immense value to your future career path.
Specifically, a certificate in disability studies will provide you with a greater understanding about the ableist structures and practices that have marginalized people with disabilities, while equipping you with practical skills for advancing diversity, equity, and inclusion in today's world, and with an emphasis within your respective academic discipline.
Having a foundational knowledge of disability studies can be beneficial for students pursuing an undergraduate degree in any academic discipline. People with disabilities are, and have always been, a part of our human family. As such, developing a deeper understanding of the various types of disabilities, what 'disability' means, and how to foster the inclusion of people with disabilities in all fields of study (e.g., church ministry, business, political science, STEAM, psychology, sociology, the arts) and within all aspects of society (e.g., employment, education, transportation, housing, healthcare) can be useful in any career path. This small eight (8) unit program will cover the foundations of disability studies, how 'disability' is perceived and represented in various fields of study, effective approaches in advancing equal access and representation of people with disabilities across societal structures, and disability etiquette (ways to effectively communicate and interact with people who have any one of a broad array of disabilities). Finally, the disability certificate will help expand our collective response and ability to develop more equitable, accessible, and inclusive environments for disabled individuals.
