Liberal Studies: Teacher Education, B.A.
Program Learning Outcomes
Liberal Studies: Teacher Education prepares candidates for a successful K-12 teaching career. Within the degree are credential courses approved by the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing.
Candidates who complete the program in Liberal Studies: Teacher Education will be able to do the following:
- Demonstrate effective oral presentation skills, one-on-one and with groups.
- Employ critical thinking to solve problems in a variety of environments, to include the K-6 classroom.
- Utilize specific content information from a variety of sources for classroom instructional planning.
- Apply an interdisciplinary understanding of content regarding diverse and cross-cultural communities.
- Cultivate their collaborative skills, nourishing their abilities to serve both as a leader and listener, to effectively work with others to execute a variety of tasks.
- Reflect on their own and other's learning, in order to make intentional changes in their personal and professional lives.
- Serve effectively within their communities and in educational settings, grounded in their faith-based beliefs and practices.

The candidate majoring in Liberal Studies: Teacher Education chooses one concentration from the following list of content areas available at PLNU. At least 8 of the units must be distinct from the major requirements, with the embedded Foundational Explorations requirements, that may have been satisfied.

ENG 1016 is for students who have transferred the first half of the GE writing requirement or received 3 units of AP English Language credit. It is a supplemental 2-unit research course, which fulfills the second half of the GE writing requirement.

MTH 2013 also fulfills and is counted as a lower-division requirement. Units are only counted once.

Each course in this section (except EDU 4017) has prerequisites and requires 20 hours in a field placement in order to meet the required field hours toward the California Preliminary Teaching Credential. See Notes.

Candidates interested in completing their credential can apply to take additional Education credential courses as an undergraduate or graduate student.

If students waive SPA 2050 and SPA 2051, they must take an additional 4-unit upper-division SPA course to fulfill the concentration requirements.
Note(s):
- Completion of this program partially fulfills requirements for a Teaching Credential in the State of California. Refer to the School of Education website for further information.
- Teacher Education majors must earn a grade of C- or higher in all non-EDU courses required by the major and in all 4000-level elective courses to get credit towards the major.
- Teacher Education majors must earn a grade of C or higher in all Education (EDU) courses, to get credit for credential courses (as per the California Commission for Teacher Credentialing guidelines).
- All candidates are required to obtain a Certificate of Clearance, a clear TB test, personal liability insurance, and the passage of FERPA training, prior to registration in any Education course.
- Failure to complete the fieldwork requirement in an Education (EDU) course will result in a non-passing grade for that course.
