GNSG 5001  Writing and Research  (3 Units)  

This course introduces foundational concepts and issues designed to assist the graduate student with scholarly writing skills and research inquiry techniques. Statistical methods for nursing research including: descriptive statistics, inferential statistics, sampling, hypothesis testing, frequency distribution, and correlation are included.

GNSG 5045  RN-MSN Transition I  (4 Units)  

This course explores Christian nursing history, scholarly writing, research, theory, and the legal/ethical foundations for practice in the professional role. This course prepares the student for GNSG 6020 and GNSG 6022.

GNSG 5046  RN-MSN Transition II  (4 Units)  

This course explores the environmental, multicultural, and global issues related to nursing in the community. Current trends in nursing management and servant leadership for communication, decision making and management of groups are also investigated.

GNSG 6000  CNS Role Acquisition  (2 Units)  

This course will focus on the role of the clinical nurse specialist and the spheres of influence in quality initiatives and ethical comportment. Leadership aspects of quality monitoring, program planning and evaluation will be analyzed. A leadership role in ethical discussions at the unit, organization and/or system level will be explored. Additionally the student will work collaboratively to enhance decision making. All specialties together.

GNSG 6002  Following Faithfully: Servant Leadership  (2 Units)  

This course focuses on the development of skills necessary for effective interpersonal communications, both written and oral. Scholarly writing and effective oral presentation principles are emphasized. Wesleyan thought as it relates to service, nursing and nursing leadership is integrated through interprofessional teaching. A review of the history of nursing based on religious teachings is discussed with an emphasis on the role of servant leadership and nursing practice. Leadership clinical hours begin during GNSG 6002. GNSG 6002 must be completed concurrently or before Leadership clinical hours may be accumulated. Hours include participation in local leadership organizations and/or activities.

GNSG 6003  Following Faithfully: Healthcare Policy and Ethics  (3 Units)  

This course provides an understanding of legal, regulatory, and socioeconomic forces that affect healthcare delivery and health outcomes for individuals, communities, and populations. Concepts related to access to healthcare, social determinants, ethical dimensions and dilemmas, local/state/national healthcare policies, quality of health care delivery, and the advanced nursing practice roles will be discussed. Emphasis will be placed on the policy, values, and principles that guide the practice of nurse leaders.

This course provides a focused examination of health assessment across the human lifespan, focusing on the concepts of health promotion, disease prevention, and nursing care.

This course provides an understanding of pathophysiology and alterations in normal human physiologic function across the life span. Emphasis will be on pathophysiological principles and clinical consequences of common disease processes that are essential for performing advanced health assessment, differential diagnoses, and clinical therapeutic decisions for treatments.

GNSG 6007  Advanced Pharmacology  (3 Units)  

This course is designed to introduce advanced pharmacology knowledge for registered nurses to practice at the advanced level across the lifespan. The course content includes principles of pharmacodynamics, pharmacokinetics, pharmacogenetics, pharmacotherapeutics, drug-drug, and drug-food interactions of broad categories of pharmacologic agents. The goal of the course is to prepare students with a well-grounded understanding and application of advanced pharmacologic principles for patient management.

This course examines strategies for health promotion, risk management, and disease prevention for all ages, individuals, families, communities, and population groups. The focus will be on theoretical models, evidence-based practice standards, the latest research and trends in health promotion, genomics, and disease prevention, and national initiatives to maximize health, well-being, and quality of life. The roles of the nurse leader and advocate for maintaining health and modifying health risk factors will be explored.

This course will assist in building the students' understanding of the process of Evidence Based Practice (EBP) and theoretical foundations. The EBP content will center on the development of clinical practice questions and review of the literature as it applies. Students will develop knowledge and skills in appraising the quality of research evidence, and subsequent application to improve clinical practice.

This course prepares students to design, plan and implement evidence-based healthcare innovation initiatives. Practical applications will be made in classroom and clinical settings and focus on quality, safety, and innovation. Current research is explored to build upon best practices in nursing education.

This course provides a basic framework for understanding and using financial information for making decisions in the healthcare industry. Topics covered include: operating and capital budgets, cost-volume-profit relationships, variance analysis, time value of money, financial statements, government accounting, and ethics in financial management.

GNSG 6088  Healthcare Leadership and Innovation  (3 Units)  

This course provides an understanding of organization and systems leadership competencies for the improvement of healthcare delivery as future nurse leaders. Students will develop knowledge of the healthcare environment, leadership skills among the interprofessional teams, professional development, financial planning and analysis, resource management, system integration, and quality improvement principles to demonstrate outcomes. Special attention will be given to systems thinking, innovation, leadership theories, quality and safety initiatives, process evaluation, gap and cost analysis, budgeting, human resources, and business planning.

GNSG 6090  Special Studies In Nursing  (0.5-3 Units)  

This course provides opportunity for selected studies in the area of Nursing as determined by the School of Nursing.

This is the culminating course for the student to demonstrate competency in achieving program learning outcomes. GNSG 7002  Applied Statistics in Health Science  (2 Units)  

This course focuses on understanding and interpreting commonly used statistical procedures reported in the literature of various health professions. Content will include descriptive and inferential statistics of univariate and multivariate analyses. Students will acquire knowledge and skills in the application of each statistical procedure, its use, as well as the interpretation of results and evaluation of the published studies.

This course examines the utilization of information and healthcare technologies to promote safe, high-quality, and efficient healthcare service. Application of these tools in accordance with regulatory and professional standards within clinical practice will be emphasized. Major topics will include electronic health records, data management, eHealth tools for patients, terminology, system interoperability, telehealth, and security and privacy practices for electronic health information.

This course addresses access to health and social determinants of health among diverse individuals, communities, and populations. This course prepares students to translate evidence into systems changes to improve quality and safety in healthcare. The focus will be on the theoretical models, high-reliability principles, application of quality improvement methods, tools, and program implementation through the examination of structure, processes, and outcomes. The content will also cover interprofessional collaboration and sustaining changes to ensure patient outcomes and organizational effectiveness.

GNSG 7030  Introduction to Advanced Practice Nursing and Diagnostic Reasoning  (3 Units)  

This course is an introduction to the advanced practice registered nurse (APRN) role. Topics will include the evolution of the nurse practitioner (NP) role from a historical and legislative perspective, issues related to the evolving scope of practice, and NP competencies. This course also addresses advanced knowledge and skills needed for diagnosis and management of health problems. Contents include symptom/health assessment, selection/interpretation of screening and diagnostic tests to formulate a differential diagnosis and management plan. Students will learn a systematic method of documentation, diagnostic reasoning, and clinical decision-making.

This course examines laboratory tests, diagnostics, imaging studies, and procedures commonly practiced by nurse practitioners. This course includes a required two-day, on-campus immersion in which students will participate in Objective Structured Clinical Evaluations (OSCEs), including specific skillsets and procedures pertinent to the care of patients across the lifespan.

Content includes health maintenance and promotion, including sexual, perinatal, and reproductive considerations of child-bearing families, the aging process, and the typical presentation of illness. Students will also explore selected topics in obstetrics, gynecology, genetics, family planning, and cancers.

This course provides clinical experience to refine assessment and diagnostic reasoning skills for managing common behavioral and mental health wellness and illness among individuals across the lifespan. The focus will be on screening, crisis intervention, pharmacologic and clinical management of common psychiatric-mental health problems, as well as referrals and interprofessional approaches to care.

Students will complete 150 hours of direct patient care.

This course emphasizes assessment, formulation of differential diagnoses, and clinical management of acute and complex chronic health problems among older adult patients in primary care. The focus will be on health maintenance, disease prevention, clinical judgment, and decision-making while managing multiple health problems and complex clinical conditions in primary care.

This course is designed to provide the student with the opportunity to synthesize assessment, pathophysiology, pharmacology, treatment, and evaluation of managing multiple health problems and complex clinical conditions for patients across the lifespan. Students will demonstrate interprofessional dialogue among healthcare leaders and deliver patient-centered care on the continuum of health.

Students will master skills and competencies in holistic assessment, applying pathophysiology and pharmacology to clinical judgment into individualized, evidence-based treatment plans. As the student transitions to an entry-level in an advanced practice role, emphasis is placed on managing multiple health problems and complex clinical conditions for patients across the lifespan.

GNSG 7036  Entry to the Advanced Practice Role  (1 Unit)  

This course is offered in the final semester of the NP program and is designed to socialize the graduating student into the role of the family nurse practitioner in the primary care setting. Topics will include the issues related to NP scope of practice, key role competencies, strategies for interprofessional collaboration and consultation, prescribing regulations, healthcare financing and reimbursement, state credentialing process, care delivery models across different settings, and national board certification examination. This course will also explore methods for marketing the NP roles and negotiation of employment, models for entrepreneurial practice, and innovative leadership. This course includes a two-day, on-campus immersion in which students will participate in Objective Structured Clinical Evaluations (OSCEs) and board certification exam preparation.

This course is the first of the five-course series for DNP student's scholarly inquiry in the clinical setting to plan, implement, collect, evaluate, and disseminate an evidence-based project. Each course builds on the knowledge, skills, and practice expertise of the student, culminating in the clinical scholarship. This course begins the initial development of the DNP project, including review of research methodology, critical appraisal, evidence synthesis, as well as initial draft of the first three Chapters of the project.

Students will practice 100 clinical hours related to the project and scholarly writing. Letter grade.  
GNSG 7050B  DNP Project Proposal and Integrative Application  (2 Units)  

This course is the second of the five-course series for DNP student's scholarly inquiry in the clinical setting to plan, implement, collect, evaluate, and disseminate an evidence-based project. Each course builds on the knowledge, skills, and practice expertise of the student, culminating in the clinical scholarship. This course builds on the initial development of the DNP project by finalizing the first three Chapters and project proposal, as well as proposal submission to the institutional review board(s).

Students will practice 100 clinical hours related to the project and scholarly writing. Letter grade.  
GNSG 7050C  DNP Project Implementation and Integrative Application  (2 Units)  

This course is the third of the five-course series for DNP student's scholarly inquiry in the clinical setting to plan, implement, collect, evaluate, and disseminate an evidence-based project. Each course builds on the knowledge, skills, and practice expertise of the student, culminating in the clinical scholarship. This course focuses on the implementation of the project within the student's clinical setting.

Students will practice 100 clinical hours related to the project and scholarly writing. Letter grade.  
GNSG 7050D  DNP Project Evaluation and Integrative Application  (2 Units)  

This course is the fourth of the five-course series for DNP student's scholarly inquiry in the clinical setting to plan, implement, collect, evaluate, and disseminate an evidence-based project. Each course builds on the knowledge, skills, and practice expertise of the student, culminating in the clinical scholarship. This course focuses on the data collection and analysis of the project data, and evaluation of the results by drafting Chapters 4 and 5.

Students will practice 100 clinical hours related to the project and scholarly writing. Letter grade.  
GNSG 7050E  DNP Project Dissemination and Integrative Application  (2 Units)  

This is the last course of the five-course series for DNP student's scholarly inquiry in the clinical setting to plan, implement, collect, evaluate, and disseminate an evidence-based project. Each course builds on the knowledge, skills, and practice expertise of the student, culminating in the clinical scholarship. Students will complete the DNP project report consisting of five Chapters and disseminate the findings in poster and oral presentation.

Students will practice 100 clinical hours related to the project and scholarly writing. Letter grade.  
GNSG 7080  Context of Practice, Populations, and Outcomes Management  (2 Units)  

This course will focus on clinical prevention (health promotion and risk reduction/illness prevention for individuals and families), chronic health care conditions and complex healthcare issues related to diverse patient populations. Through the analysis of policy processes, the student will actively engage in politically competent action to improve outcomes.

GNSG 7081  Economics and Finance in Healthcare  (3 Units)  

This course addresses the basic economic and financial theory and its application within the contemporary healthcare environment. Topics will cover healthcare finances and reimbursements, cost-benefit analysis, capital budgeting, and the healthcare market with a particular focus on the clinical role of the advanced practice nursing in complex healthcare organizations.

GNSG 7082  Foundations of Genetics and Genomics in Clinical Practice  (3 Units)  

This course prepares students to develop essential competencies in genetics and genomics as advanced practice nurses. The focus will be on the genetic basis of disease and risk assessment. Integration of genetic and genomic knowledge for health promotion, disease prevention, and management strategies for individuals and populations will be explored. The ethical, legal, and social issues of genetic testing and technology in clinical care and research endeavors will also be addressed.

GNSG 7083  A Culture of Belonging and Inclusion  (3 Units)  

This course focuses on the intrinsic knowledge and skills necessary to improve patients' experience of care, improve the health of populations and reduce per capita health care costs through understanding of extrinsic influences. Students explore the foundation of diversity and examine the impact of interprofessional collaboration to exhibit a culture of care. The Interprofessional Education Collaborative (IPEC) competencies will be used as a framework to enhance team-based care of patients and improve population health outcomes.

GNSG 7091  Curriculum Development and Evaluation  (3 Units)  

This course provides students with a variety of teaching strategies and evaluative approaches designed to promote a productive and effective learning environment. Selected teaching learning theories are examined and applied to the role of nurse educator and nursing education practice.
